I'm so sorry this happened to you. Churches are so harsh in applying "disciple or tough love." For reading a book? Oh my, instead of really practicing love for one another and being very careful when a serious sin is continued in proudly, our churches either never ever use tough love, or use it as a sledge hammer. I agree with your last statement: its application in the wrong way or attitude or wrong circumstances is idiotic. I hope you can find healing in Christ .. and a loving group of real Christians.
I remember when the church advised the practice of “tough love.” It was unnecessarily destructive when applied to the wrong setting.
I was “cut off” for reading a book that a family member disagreed with. They came to me a year later wanting to restore our relationship,
I’m currently cut off from another family member for attending a messianic shul.
Its application in the wrong circumstance is idiotic.
Of late, I felt an urging to contact my brother. So, I sent a belated and rather humorous birthday card. An old B&W family photo was included.
We’re all up in age and a loving act brings no regrets.
